Purchase and Propagation History:
1st Generation
Received on December 10, 2022, as a mid-cut seven-leaved shoot, this particular cultivar arrived nameless and was kindly bestowed upon me by my spouse, Mary Ann Siy. This cultivar stands out with a unique pattern of white variegation adorned with numerous green spots. Remarkably, the variegation's hue remains consistent on both its juvenile and mature leaves. However, the visual characteristics and intensity of variegation vary among individual leaves. In its current state as an initial-generation plant, this cultivar requires propagation via stem cuttings to gauge the uniformity of its variegation pattern. It is crucial to meticulously monitor leaf patterns to ensure the stability and persistence of variegation.
Upon receiving the cultivar, it underwent a propagation process, resulting in its division into five sections. The details of these propagations are as follows:
1 Top Cut, comprising 3 leaves,
3 Mid-cuts, containing 1 leaf, and
1 Base-cut, containing 1 leaf
2nd Generation
Growth History
As of July 14, 2023, after an additional 7 months of cultivation, here is the status update on the 1st generation propagation:
a. 1 Top Cut, comprising 3 leaves, is now a 11 leafer
b. 1 Mid-cut(A), containing 1 leaf, is now a 5 leafer
c. 1 Mid-cut(B), containing 1 leaf, is now a 5 leafer
d. 1 Mid-cut(C), containing 1 leaf, is now a 5 leafer
e. 1 Base-cut(D), containing 1 leaf, is now a 5 leafer
The mother plants have now given rise to the subsequent propagation:
1. 3-leaf 1 Top Cut is now a 6-leaf cultivar, propagated as follows:
a. 1 Top Cut, comprising 3 leaves
b. 7 Mid Cut, 1 leaf per pot
c. 1 Base Cut, 1 leaf
2. 1 Mid-cut(A), containing 1 leaf cultivar, propagated as follows:
a. 1 Top Cut, comprising 3 leaves
b. 1 Mid Cut, 1 leaf per pot
c. 1 Base Cut, 1 leaf
3. 1 Mid-cut(B), containing 1 leaf cultivar, propagated as follows:
a. 1 Top Cut, comprising 3 leaves
b. 1 Mid Cut, 1 leaf per pot
c. 1 Base Cut, 1 leaf
4. 1 Mid-cut(C), containing 1 leaf cultivar, propagated as follows:
a. 1 Top Cut, comprising 3 leaves
b. 1 Mid Cut, 1 leaf per pot
c. 1 Base Cut, 1 leaf
5. 1 Base-cut(D), containing 1 leaf cultivar, propagated as follows:
a. 1 Top Cut, comprising 3 leaves
b. 1 Mid Cut, 1 leaf per pot
c. 1 Base Cut, 1 leaf
3rd Generation
On September 12, 2023, following a span of 2 months for growth, here is the progress report for the propagated cultivar.
The summary of the total propagations are as follows:
1. 5 Top Cuts from the previous generation
a. 1st Top Cut – is now 8 Leaves
b. 2nd Top Cut – is now 10 Leaves
c. 3rd Top Cut – is now 6 Leaves
d. 4th Top Cut – is now 6 Leaves
e. 5th Top Cut – is now 6 Leaves
2. 15 pots, Mid Cuts and Base Cuts, from the previous generation
a. 11 Mid Cuts – are now 2 leaves
b. 2 Mid Cuts – are now 4 leaves
c. 2 Mid Cuts – are now 5 leaves
Summary
Variegation, white spotted with green, remains present and consistent across all generations of stem propagation, from the 1st to the 3rd generation.
Name Origin:
On July 30, 2023, an event was hosted on the Planter Tong Hong Facebook account, initiating a contest to christen this exceptional Scindapsus cultivar native to the Philippines. We chose the name "Scindapsus Perlas," drawing inspiration from the captivating beauty of the Philippine Pearl. The name perfectly mirrors the appearance of this unique plant: its white variegation, akin to the lustrous elegance of pearls, and the delicate green speckles reminiscent of the natural beauty of this cultivar. Much like pearls are cherished for their rarity and beauty, "Scindapsus Perlas" signifies a precious gem within the world of plants, originating from the Philippines, a genuine natural treasure.
The name "Perlas" was bestowed upon it by Kean and Micki, and in Tagalog, "Perlas" translates to "Pearl." This choice resonated because it elegantly links the plant's white-speckled green variegation with the allure of pearls often associated with the Philippines. It also evokes the name "Perlas ng Silanganan" or "Pearl of the Orient," frequently used to describe the Philippines. Its multitudinous green specks also portrays the numerous islands in that can be found in the Philippines. This selection beautifully encapsulates the rarity and beauty of this cultivar.
Kean's subsequent statement, "Kagaya nitong scindapsus na ito likhang napaka ganda at one of a kind kagaya ng ating minamahal na bansa," draws deep inspiration from the beauty of our beloved nation. Just as our country, with its myriad islands, is celebrated for its exceptional beauty, this statement draws a meaningful parallel between the captivating allure of the plant and the enchanting charm of the Philippine Islands. In the vast world of Scindapsus varieties, this particular one captures our attention, much like our country does with its extraordinary beauty.
Growth Habit:
Growth habit
Potting Mix: It is placed on the 3 parts perlite and 1 part Wood Compost mix "Alnus"
Sunlight: It is placed on a growlight of 18 hours per day to provide the needed lighting requirement to maintain the variegation of the plant.
Watering: It was grown maintaining a weekly watering schedule in a semi indoor location.
Humidity: It was placed on a close glass container to maintain a humidity of 70%-90% Humidity
Temperature: The growing temperature condition is at 25°C - 30°C
Other growing condition:
This was placed on pole and carefully made sure the emerging aerial roots was covered with moss to allow the roots to grow for easier propagation.
Leaf Blade:
Leaf Description - The leaves of this new Scindapsus variety exhibit distinctive characteristics. They typically take on a heart shape with pointed tips. When you run your fingers across their surface, they feel somewhat smooth, reminiscent of standard bond paper. These leaves can reach lengths of up to 10 centimeters and widths of about 7 centimeters. Their coloration varies, with some parts appearing dark green, while others display variegation, showcasing white with a high density of small green spots. Additionally, you'll find shiny silver patches scattered irregularly on the leaves, imparting a silvery appearance with varying intensity. The variegation patterns on each leaf are always unique and somewhat random. Some leaves have minimal variegation (around 20%), while others are nearly entirely variegated (up to 100%).
