Base Species or Cultivar:
Scindapsus pictus
Cultivar Origin:
The specimen, obtained from an unidentified Scindapsus plant discovered on Palawan Island in the Philippines in 2021 and acquired from Rudylyn D. Mangulabnan, was grown both outdoors and indoors under an 18-watt full-spectrum grow light.
Name Origin:
"Takip-silim" is a Filipino word that translates to "twilight" or "sunset" in English. It is also synonymous with the Filipino words "dapit-hapon" and "agaw-dilim." The name "Takip-silim" is particularly fitting for this Scindapsus because the color of the leaf turns dark grey as it matures, reminiscent of the dark grey skies that appear when day turns into night.
Growth Habit:
Takip-silim is a climbing plant with characteristics similar to other Scindapsus species. An aroid mix was used as the potting medium for all specimens. The leaves start out relatively thin and gradually become thicker as the plant matures. These plants were cultivated in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, they received light from full-spectrum grow lights ranging from 18 to 50 watts. Outdoors, they thrive best in bright, shaded areas. While the plant is not highly sensitive to watering, it is advisable to take precautions to avoid root rot.
Leaf Blade:
Takip-silim is characterized by cordate leaves arranged in an alternate pattern along its stem. Arcuate venation is evident throughout the leaf blade. The leaf surface has a matte texture, and the venation becomes more prominent as the leaf matures. Additionally, the dark grey color of the leaves intensifies with age. The largest leaf measures 4 cm in length and 2 cm in width, while the smaller leaves measure around 2 cm in length and 1 cm in width.
Bloom and Fruit:
None observed.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Mature leaves of Takip-silim exhibit a dark grey color and a notably matte texture. Unlike Pictus varieties, it lacks the typical silver specks. The midrib is distinguished by dark grey marks where the venation converges in the center of the leaf. Stems do not exhibit prominent lines, but as they mature, they develop a verrucate texture.
