Cultivar Origin:

Name Origin:

Smaug was identified as a young seedling for possessing very thick, narrow leaves with dark color and was an outlier from an early stage. Named for the dragon Smaug in the Hobbit book for its elongated shape and unusual leathery texture.

Growth Habit:

Terrestrial/hemiepiphytic. Compact growth habit with short internode spacing. Petioles and leaf blades erect.

Leaf Blade:

Elongated unusually thick leaves with leathery texture. Dark nearly black leaf coloration with interesting bluish gray undertone from the debile parent. Deep blood red emergent coloration. Petioles are maroon, multi-angular/ridged 4-5 sided.

Bloom and Fruit:

Green/yellow spadix with maroon tinged green spathe. Berries are purple.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The primary characteristics that distinguish this plant is the combination of its aberrant texture and leaf thickness with the leaves being very thick/stiff and possessing a leathery texture.
Smaug also has elongated extremely dark leaves which possess a very interesting bluish gray undertone imparted by the debile parent.
