The name 'Phantom Flame' refers to the cultivar's ghostly cream-yellow foliage combined with the dramatic flame-like burgundy coloration of emerging leaves and cataphylls. Flame is also a reference to it's marginal sun stressed coloration and also shape of the leaves.
Growth Habit:
Climbing (scandent) evergreen aroid with moderate vigor. Juvenile growth compact with shortened internodes; mature growth producing an elongate stem capable of climbing when supported. Leaves borne on arching burgundy petioles, forming a broad, layered canopy.
Leaf Blade:
Elongate sagittate, coriaceous, moderately glossy; apex acuminate, margins entire, base shallowly sagittate. Emergent foliage burgundy-red to copper-red. Mature foliage irregularly variegated cream-yellow, chartreuse, and dark green. Variegation expressed as broad sectoral, marginal, and medial patterns. Midrib prominent. Petioles and emerging foliage retain deep burgundy pigmentation. The leaves appear narrower and more elongated than many mature 'Dark Lord' leaves, giving the plant a more elegant, flame-like appearance.
