Name Origin:
It's thought to be a lost cultivar of the 60’s that thrived at Green Gate nursery in Texas. Joe Tocquigny, the original owner, was said to have grown it underneath the greenhouse benches as a ground cover. He wasn’t particularly fond of the plant at the time and made it a point to cut it back when it’d become unruly. Joe had considered them weeds by now but his daughter, Elise T., thought the plant to be a gorgeous addition to her collection. Elise, who has recently passed, would go on to keep a few individuals at her personal greenhouse. This collector mindset would lead the plant to flourish and make its way into hundreds of collections across the world. One of those collections being that of Anthony M Garcia & his partner Saji Mathai of Nirvana Tropicals. The two of them would create beautiful & exciting hybrids with this original stock material. Thanks to them we have detailed photos of fruit and infructescence. James Pease is now the steward of Elise's collection and has continued to propagate this cultivar carrying on part of her legacy.
Growth Habit:
Climbing / Hemiepiphytic
Leaf Blade:
Rigid elongated glossy arrow head shaped leaves with yellow variegation
Bloom and Fruit:
The spathe shares the same variegation as the foliage, green with splashes of aurea and white. The inside is lined red. The spadix is partially variegated and produces a red resin. The fruit ripens to a light orange producing small black seeds.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Thick rigid aurea leaves which maintain their vibrant color for many leaves. Unlike the more common Jose Buono which displays dark green foliage with splotches of lighter green variegation. I have included a comparison photo between two mature individuals.
