Cultivar Origin:

Name Origin:

‘Makiling’ was named after the mountain where the seeds were originally acquired, Mt. Makiling. This dormant volcano in Laguna, Philippines, is known for its rich biodiversity, dense rainforest, and cultural significance. It is a popular hiking destination and a protected forest reserve managed by the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Mt. Makiling takes its name from Mariang Makiling, a legendary fairy or diwata in Philippine folklore, believed to be the guardian spirit of the mountain. She is often portrayed as a beautiful, kind-hearted woman who protects the forest and its wildlife, guiding lost travelers and helping those in need.

The striking white variegation on the plant’s leaf blades is a visual reminder of the enchanting beauty of Mariang Makiling herself.

Growth Habit:

This Scindapsus pictus cultivar shares similar growth requirements with other varieties in the species. It performs best in a chunky, well-draining soilless mix, ideally suited for tropical climates with temperatures between 25°C and 35°C. Consistent humidity levels of 40-70% and good air circulation are vital for healthy growth.

For optimal results, place the plant in a bright location that receives gentle morning and afternoon sunlight, enhanced with full-spectrum grow lights if needed. Proper watering practices are key, allow the medium to partially dry out between watering to avoid root rot caused by excess moisture.

Leaf Blade:

Length: Young leaves are about 6.0 cm; mature leaves are about 10.0 cm.
Width: Young leaves are about 3.0 cm; mature leaves are about 6.0 cm.

Scindapsus ‘Makiling’ is distinguished by its elliptical leaves with a cordate base and an acuminate apex, arranged in an alternate phyllotaxy along the stem. The leaves exhibit pinnate venation and undulate (wavy) margins. These undulate margins create a rippled surface across the leaf blade, contributing to its unique texture and morphology. White variegation is irregularly splattered throughout the leaf blade, further enhancing its distinctive appearance.

Bloom and Fruit:

Not yet observed on propagated plants.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The undulate margins, which give the leaf surface a distinctive rippled texture, are a key feature that sets this Scindapsus apart from other varieties. These margins are accentuated by white coloration along the edges, creating a striking contrast that highlights the leaf shape. Unlike many other variegated cultivars, this particular plant does not exhibit prominent striping or markings on its stem.
