Cultivar Origin:

Name Origin:

The name ‘Safir Kuning’ means “Yellow Sapphire.” The name was chosen as a tribute to the country where the cultivar was found. “Safir” means “sapphire,” while “Kuning” means “yellow,” reflecting the distinctive yellow coloration of the plant.

Growth Habit:

Scindapsus ‘Safir Kuning’ is a vining, climbing aroid with a flexible growth habit. The plant produces successive nodes along its stem and develops new growth from the apical portion of the vine. When provided with suitable support, such as a moss pole or other textured climbing structure, the plant can climb and establish itself vertically. Without support, the stems may grow in a trailing or cascading manner.

The cultivar grows well under warm, humid tropical conditions, with temperatures generally maintained around 22–30°C (72–86°F) and relative humidity of approximately 60–90%. Consistent warmth and humidity support active vegetative growth and establishment.

As a vegetatively propagated cultivar originating from Scindapsus pictus ‘Silver Knight’, ‘Safir Kuning’ is maintained through propagation from established plant material to preserve the cultivar.

Leaf Blade:

The leaves of Scindapsus ‘Safir Kuning’ are thick, broadly ovate to elliptic, with an entire margin and a pointed apex. The foliage has a firm, somewhat leathery texture.

The most distinctive characteristic is the strong yellow-and-dark-green sectoral variegation. Yellow sectors range from bright lemon-yellow to golden-yellow and often occupy a substantial portion of the leaf, frequently forming a longitudinal or half-moon pattern.

The green portions retain the subtle silvery mottling and satin-like appearance characteristic of Scindapsus pictus ‘Silver Knight’. The proportion and distribution of yellow and green vary between individual leaves, while the overall variegation pattern remains distinctive.

Bloom and Fruit:

None observed

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Scindapsus ‘Safir Kuning’ is distinguished by its narrower leaf form compared with the broader leaves commonly associated with Scindapsus pictus ‘Silver Knight’, while retaining the characteristic silver mottling of the source cultivar.

New leaves continue to display the recognizable silver markings of ‘Silver Knight’, clearly reflecting its origin, while developing prominent yellow and dark-green sectoral variegation as they mature. The yellow sectors can occupy a substantial portion of the leaf and may form distinctive longitudinal or half-moon patterns.

The combination of its narrower leaf form, retained Silver Knight silver markings, and pronounced yellow sectoral variegation distinguishes ‘Safir Kuning’ from typical ‘Silver Knight’ and other known forms of Scindapsus pictus.
